What is a dental hygienist in Rothwell?

Dental hygienists, together with your dentist play an important part in keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

As the name suggests, dental hygienists focus on the hygiene of your teeth, gums and mouth and how this impacts your oral health.

At Trinity Dental in Rothwell, we believe in a preventative approach to dentistry. Dental hygienists do important work in ensuring your mouth is clean and healthy which in turn prevents more serious issues such as cavities, tooth decay and gum disease from occurring.

At Trinity Dental, our dental hygienists see thousands of patients from Rothwell, Glendon, Thorpe Underwood, Kettering, Loddington, Rushton, and throughout Northamptonshire.

What do dental hygienists at Trinity Dental in Rothwell do?

Our dental hygienists in Rothwell spend a lot of their time preventing the build up of plaque on your teeth which can cause tooth decay and gum disease. At Trinity Dental we offer a range of dental hygiene services:

Regular dental hygiene clean

Our regular dental hygiene clean is offered to patients every 6 months to ensure their optimum oral health.

During this regular clean, your dental hygienist scale and polish your teeth. This involves gently scraping at teeth to remove plaque. If plaque is not removed from your teeth, it will harden and become tartar which is much more difficult to get rid of and can become more serious if it is left untreated near the gum line. Once the plaque or tartar is removed, your dental hygienist then polishes your teeth.

This painless procedure doesn’t take long, and you’ll notice an immediate difference – your teeth will look noticeably brighter and cleaner, and you’ll be able to feel the difference too.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

Guided Biofilm Therapy is the systematic, evidence-based solution for dental biofilm management in professional prevention using state of the art AIRFLOW®, PERIOFLOW® and PIEZON® technologies on teeth, soft tissues and implants.

Bad breath

Bad breath or halitosis is caused by the build-up of bacteria in your mouth. If you are suffering with halitosis, your dental hygienist can treat it by giving your mouth a thorough and deep clean to remove the bacteria around your teeth, and gums.

Treating gum disease

Gum disease is often difficult to spot. The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis and you may develop bleeding, sore or inflamed gums. If this happens, your dental hygienist can help treat it.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to the more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. Your dental hygienist will treat gingivitis, often with antibiotics and a thorough deep clean of your mouth. If periodontitis is left untreated, your teeth are at risk of becoming loose and falling out.

Advice

Dental hygienists give good advice about the best ways to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy. They can show you how to best brush your teeth and help with flossing and using interdental toothbrushes if your teeth are crowded.

Dental hygienists will focus on what is right for you, your mouth and your lifestyle. If you have undergone other treatment such as teeth straightening, dental implants, crowns or veneers, your dental hygienist can talk to you about how best to keep these devices and restorations clean.

Walk in Hygiene (Direct Access)

Last year the General Dental Council changed the scope of practice for Dental hygienists and Dental Therapists. Meaning that patients now have the option to see a dental care professional (DCP) without having first seen the dentist and without a prescription from a dentist.

The appointment is designed to remove stains, Calculus and plaque deposits that can cause gum diseases. The hygienist will advise on how to clean effectively and how to maintain a healthy mouth leaving you with a bright smile.

Appointments will be chargeable and a medical history questionnaire will need to be filled in prior to treatment. During your appointment the hygienist will not responsible for carrying out a full dental examination or diagnosis beyond there scope of practice however should anything be seen or if the patient has any cause for concern they will be advised to seek further treatment from their own dentist or referral to see a dentist here at the clinic.
